The New Smyrna Beach High School PTSA organized a committee to present THE THIRD ANNUAL FISHING FOR CUDAS In-Shore Tournament on September 10th, 2011 at the Fishing Store in New Smyrna Beach. A total of 78 anglers participated in this tournament which was started three years ago in response to the School District’s “Pay-to-Play” initiative that required all students to pay to participate in individual and team sports. ALL proceeds from this tournament benefit the NSBHS Athletic Department. The tournament was HOSTED by The People for Drug Free Youth, Inc. Other tournament sponsors included Rue & Ziffra and 3N2 Sports, COSTA Del Mar, Hell’s Bay Boatworks, Everglades Boats, Edgewater Boats, Mullinax Ford, Wheel Away Trailer Sales, Hendrick’s Printing and many others. Randal Preston, a local artist, donated original numbered prints of Redfish and Trout scenes to complement the cash pries in all categories.
The Silent Auction included items donated by Community businesses including Costa, Deer Fly Adventures, Palmetto Consulting, New Smyrna stand-up, Shimano and many other local businesses including Fishing Charters donated by local Captains. The RAFFLE featured a Gheenoe and Trailer complete with Suzuki motor donated by Bossman Boats, Capt. Aaron Dill and Diamond Suzuki. The day was full of fun for the whole family with live entertainment provided by Greg Cardino and local vendors including Oak Hill Seafood Co-op, Hot Diggity Dogs, and Clancy’s Cantina serving great food! The CUDA athletes had drink booths set up. (Food for the Friday night anglers meeting was donated by Lil Neal’s Barbecue, Dustin’s BBQ, Beef O’Brady’s, Clancy’s Cantina.)
Gloria Preston, the Tournament coordinator, said this event was made possible by a small committee of dedicated members who believe in the importance of ensuring every student with a desire to participate in sports will have the opportunity regardless of their ability to pay. The committee met regularly for several months and worked hard to secure Sponsors and Donors to make this event possible. Ms. Preston referred to a famous quote “Never doubt that a small group can change the world – it is indeed the only thing that ever has!”
The committee would like to thank ALL SPONSORS, DONORS, FOOD VENDORS, ANGLERS, and VOLUNTEERS for participating in this community event that resulted in well over $20,000.00 raised to benefit The New Smyrna Beach High School Athletic Department

It all began…
In September of 2009 during the annual Principal Planning Meeting at New Smyrna Beach High School, Linda Froman listened as Principal; Dr. Kelley shared her priorities for the 2009-2010 school year. One of her main concerns was the amount of seniors who drop out just short of reaching graduation. As she listened, Linda thought of the already large group of seniors on her case load who were a high risk of dropping out. She began to think of ways to help motivate them to stay in school. She asked Dr. Kelley’s permission to meet with these students weekly during their academic advisement period. Dr. Kelley wholeheartedly gave her approval. Eight days later Linda brought a group of sixteen seniors together and shared her plan for their senior year. It went something like this: “All of you are going to graduate this year! You have come too far to give up now. You are going to celebrate and encourage each other every step of the way. We will meet every Thursday during your academic advisement period. After each grading period we will go out to dinner at a restaurant of your choice to eat. I am not going to pay for it, you are not going to pay for it, I don’t know who is going to pay for it… but we are going! If you cannot afford a year book, to pay for senior dues, Prom, Homecoming, Grad Bash or anything else to make your senior year great, I will find a way for all of these to be paid for. You have to go to your Prom and I would like for you to go to Homecoming also, even if you do not want to go! You will regret it if you don’t. If you need help with

People for Drug Free Youth, Inc., recently donated $1,500 to New Smyrna Beach High School to support a Prevention and Education program for all students to help kick-off the 2011-2012 school year.
It is unfortunate when students are lost to the use of drugs and alcohol. By partnering with New Smyrna Beach High School, People for Drug Free Youth is supporting school efforts to encourage all students to make positive choices. To help kick off the 2011-2012 school year, Marc Mero, motivational speaker, will share his experiences with all students using his theme “Champion of Choices.” Highlights of Marc’s presentation include goal setting, consequences of choices, and making positive choices. Following the kick-off and motivational speaker, students will be offered resources for additional support and encouragement by school counselors, teachers, administrators, and other school staff.

The Senior Class had their last day on NSBHS’s campus as they walked through the Legacy Walk in the courtyard as underclassmen stood along the perimeters watching the se
niors final day on campus. The Legacy Walk included stations that commemorated their lives through school, including photos from their elementary and middle school years, photos and props from homecoming, prom, Chaucer day, etc. The band played, underclassmen athletes were dressed in uniform, teachers wore “Make A Splash” t-shirts to honor the seniors, and to witness a special event that was about to take place on their school’s campus. Guests included former principal, Dr. Carol Kelly, Jan Stevens (originator of the Legacy Walk), the artist and his family, singer Alex Kinsey (performing the senior’s class song)and the mayor’s mother, Mrs. Mary Barringer, spoke on the meaning of the title “Make A Splash”, encouraging seniors to go out into the world and make a positive difference.
Mr. John “Smittee” Smith (smitteesairbrush.com) created a 9 ½ foot tall metal sculpture of the mighty barracuda. Airbrushed and sealed paint on the concrete for the SPLASH at the base of the barracuda creating the illusion that the barracuda was jumping out of the “concrete sea” in the middle of the courtyard. The funding of this project came from the 5 senior classes that have graduated from the school’s new location.
Smittee and his family unveiled the sculpture in front of over 2,000 cheering students and guests. During the remainder of the day, thousands of photographs were taken as the student body and guests posed by the newly revealed work of art.

Each year our Project Graduation Committee plans and organizes our traditional drug/alcohol free event the night of graduation. The overall goal of the committee is to increase awareness by providing a safe environment at a community sponsored/funded event for our students that reinforces that we oppose drug and alcohol use. Every senior is given the opportunity to participate and celebrate Graduation during this fun filled evening which is likely to be the last time the graduating seniors will be together as a group.
Throughout the year we hold fundraising activities to raise enough money to pay for the all night party which will be held this year at WonderWorks in Orlando, FL. This facility will be closed to the public and opened just for our graduating seniors. We also must rely on our Business Partnerships within our community for donations and grant opportunities to meet our goals. The money we raise will be used to cover all costs associated with this event, including transportation to and from Orlando, admission, food, arcade games, interactive games, lazer tag, three-story challenging ropes course, XD theater motion ride, and much more.
